Emerging Talent: Sculptor James Portsmouth

Did you know that south Devon is in fact a brilliant place to go if you’re looking for contemporary art for sale? Here at Mayne Gallery, we devote a lot of our exhibition space to up and coming young new artists and love being in a position to help support those with the talent to really go far in the art world.

Sculptor James Portsmouth is certainly one of those. The award-winning steel artist graduated from Herefordshire & Ludlow College of Rural Crafts in 2013 and has since gone on to found his own business, JP Ironwork, specialising in the creation of contemporary steel artworks.

He has exhibited at Delamore Arts, the RHS Winter Exhibition, the Edinburgh Art Show and the International Art Show in Kensington, also picking up awards at the Devon County Show and claiming the WCB Frank Day Award for himself back in 2014.

“From being self-taught and mentored by master craftsmen in both traditional and contemporary ironwork techniques, I am now passionate about building a business that gives a fresh, contemporary & innovative approach to the sculpture world,” he says.

A lot of his stunning steelworks focus on the natural world, such as Undercurrent, which captures the dramatic motions of a marlin breaking through the surface of the sea, or Descent, which captures the elegant dive of a kingfisher as it darts towards the river.

One of our particular favourites here at Mayne Gallery, however, has to be Poise – a life-size steel interpretation of a female figure as she dives backwards.

Portsmouth also takes private commissions so if you have an idea for a piece of art that you’d like to have reimagined in steel, why not get in touch to see if he’s available.
